The Griffin Survivor Extreme is marked improvement over the Survivor Summit. As I said in my Survivor Strong review, I like the updated line of Griffin cases. BUT between the Strong and Extreme, I still like the Strong because I like to use my buttons.
BUT if you’re rougher with your devices, this is the only one of the very few, if not the only one I can think of that offers the maximum amount of protection for your iPhone. And I’m not talking about Forticore.
Honestly, I would choose this case over the Ballistic Tough Jacket Maxx and Otterbox Defender.

At Mobile Reviews Eh!, Monty and I base our reviews on actual usage. And we do get bored of reviewing cases. Especially when cases don’t change. BUT when a new lineup shows up, well, Monty gets filled with giddy joy.
The Griffin Survivor Extreme is a slick looking case. There are a variety of different layers to the case and everything fuses together quite well. My case had a seam that was fairly noticeable on the case but that’s about it.
The iPhone sits in a what looks like a PC frame that slides into a larger case that Griffin basically forticored all over.
The Survivor Extreme is a bulky case. It does ok from a thickness standpoint but this case will add almost 10mm’s to the iPhone’s width.
The back of the case is recessed a bit so that it prevents the matted finish from scratching as much and helps with the handling of the product as it makes it feel a little thinner than it actually is. I will note that this matte finish doesn’t show fingerprinting much which was a big complaint for me when it came to the Survivor Strong.
Now the texture of this case is what makes it shine. The main edge of the case has a series of diamond shaped bumps that make the case easy to grip. Behind the main edge, the case has a matte finish that is a big more aggressive than the finish on the Griffin Survivor Strong. And surprisingly enough, the black piece also has a finish on it so going laterally around the edges, you have this fade in textures which improves the handling of the product in your palm.
In terms of accessing my iPhone, the only issue I had was with the buttons. They are quite stiff. It takes a bit of effort to press through the edge BUT that’s a trade off you have to make when you go with a tough case. It’s a shame because between the Defender and Tough Jacket Maxx, this case has the worst buttons between the three.
Accessing the screen wasn’t an issue despite the extreme width, camera access was fine and the port was accessible even with the annoying port flap.
When it comes to protection, the Griffin Survivor Extreme is supposedly going to offer you with 15ft of drop protection.
The standout protection features deal with the environmental protection the case will offer. Not many cases offer dust covers for the speaker grills...the only case that does so in recent memory is the terrible LifeProof Next.
So if you work in a dusty environment, this is the case to get between the Tough Jacket Maxx and Defender. Honestly, only a waterproof case would offer more environmental protection for your device.
When it comes to glass protection, the screen, even with a screen protector will have a decent amount of clearance on a flat surface. The back of the case will also keep the cameras on your triple eyed monster protected as well.
Now when it comes to screen protectors that fit, the Griffin Survivor Extreme won’t fit 3D screen protectors or ones that are case friendly. It will work best with a 2.5D screen protector. On this Giffrin Survivror Extreme, I have one of FLOLAB’s 2.5D screen protectors and it fits incredibly well with the case. Other options that might works, and I stress ~might because I do have them for the 11 Pro Max would include the non 3D version of the Zagg Elite and Otterbox Amplfiy.
Now my only concern with this product will come from corner face drops. The frame that the iPhone sits in actually slide in and out quite easily so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the iPhone pop out during one of those drops. BUT I guess that’s what we’re going to find out next!
