These are some quick tests comparing the Apple M1 Macbook Pro with the 2020 iMac for high resolution 8k video editing. I also test stitching 8k 60fps 360 video shot with the insta360 pro 2 camera. I use the insta360 stitcher software for this. I was planning to test Mistika VR also but didn't have time in the end. Next time. The computers tested are the M1 Macbook Pro 8Gb ram, the 2020 iMac 8 core 3.8Gz, Radeon pro 5700XT graphics, 32Gb ram and a 2017 iMac 4.2Gz quad core, Radeon pro 580 graphics, 8Gb ram. I run transcoding, encoding and playback tests on Final Cut Pro and encoding tests on Adobe Premiere Pro.
I've come to rely on the dual booting of the Intel Macs for running Oculus and Steam VR as well as my regular Mac software. The absence of Boot Camp on the Apple silicon macs makes this impossible for the time being. The transition to Apple silicon will therefore be relatively slow for me. This was my impetus for performing these tests. Virtual reality performance on the 2020 iMac with the Radeon pro 5700XT Graphics card is really good. I'd need a pretty good PC to run alongside a future silicon mac to get anything like the system I have now - that has it all contained in one computer.
