I have had this unit for about two months and use it in a number of different airplanes, large and small, to provide a GPS signal for my electronic flight bag (moving map) application on the iPad 2.
After a break in period to populate the almanac (2 or 3 flights), it locks on fast and provides an accurate signal. I have placed it up to about 30 feet away and it connected to the ipad fine through a bulkhead and some avionics racks.
It works well in aircraft with windshield heat and Ive had no problems tracking satellites up to 66-deg north with 10m accuracy.
Battery life has been better than advertised, reaching 7 hours on one occasion and it charges quickly, in about an hour, after a full discharge, which happens frequently because its so small, I tend to forget it up on the glare shield.
You can plug the supplied USB charging cord into a computer USB port or the supplied cigarette lighter adapter and it also works well plugged in to an iPad/iPhone AC "wall wart." My only complaint is that the supporting application on the iPad (the Dual GPS status tool) often locks up between uses requiring a restart of the iPad to get it going again (force close of the app on the iPad doesnt work).
When this happens, the GPS unit works fine and sends good data to my moving map application, but the status tool just locks up. A hard restart of the iPad works every time.
This is a great product, is worth the $99 and I recommend it to anyone interested in a Bluetooth unit for the iPad or other devices.
The XGPS150 is a small (2"x2"x0.5") self powered device. It is small enough to fit easily into a pocket. It works with all iOS devices that have Bluetooth.
To use it, you just turn on Bluetooth in the General Settings. It takes just a few seconds to discover the XGPS150. Click on its name in the list to pair with the device.
When the GPS is paired with your iOS device, you will get a message asking if you wish to download the app required to use the accessory. Click yes to launch the App Store and download the Dual GPS Status Tool.
