Here are the steps to get rid of the number on the icon of App Store. The number itself is telling you that apps need to be updated.

To update the apps, click on "App Store"
Then click on the person icon at the top right with the number
Finally, click on the "Update All" link/button on the left side of the middle of the screen.

Easy huh?
