The Frankentosh is alive...again! Works so far so I'm happy. I was regularly having to delete files on my old SSD but now I hope to have enough space for awhile. It'll extend the life of my sketchily purchased broken laptop. I've had it for probably a year and a half though so I don't know why I didn't upgrade sooner.

For those interested:

Used an iFixit tool kit and an OWC 500 GB SSD. Had to install Mountain Lion then High Sierra so that it would let me get back up to Catalina. The reason I installed it twice is because I tried to restore it straight from Mountain Lion but it didn't work. It would reboot and then just load for ages. Had to erase everything and reformat. Once I did a clean install I used Migration assistant to get all my files back and it's been running like a champ since.
