MORE pet dogs are drinking from water bottles these days.
Five pet shops told my paper that sales of water bottles for dogs have gone up in the past year by 10 to 50 per cent. Previously, such water bottles were more commonly used for small animals such as hamsters and rabbits.
Now, dog owners have realised that water bottles can keep water out of the reach of playful dogs that might upset water bowls, said the pet-shop owners.
However, Mr Daniel Koh, owner of D'Paws Trade, a pet shop in Tampines, said he does not sell such water bottles as he believes it is "unnatural for dogs to have to raise their heads when drinking water".
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals prefers the use of water bowls for pet dogs, as the bowls give dogs better access to water than water bottles, said its spokesman.
Similarly, while the Agri- Food & Veterinary Authority does not object to the sale of water bottles for dogs, it recommends dog owners to provide their dogs with water bowls at home, said its spokesman.
But Dr Lennie Lee, a senior partner at a private veterinary clinic, told my paper that as long as pet owners get a bottle of appropriate size, place it at a suitable height and ensure the water is clean, water bottles should not harm dogs.
