Apple makes great computers. I’ve been using Macs for 25 years now and there’s no way I’d ever go back to using a Windows PC. However, that doesn’t mean I’m totally uncritical of the guys at Cupertino. Whether it’s forcing me to buy expensive soldered RAM when I order a laptop or making it impossible to replace or upgrade my SSD, Apple tries my patience at times. Another way Apple likes to annoy its customers is by putting hardly any ports on its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. If you have a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with just two USB-C ports, you’re probably looking around for a suitable dock that can add the ports and power delivery needed to turn a Mac laptop into a versatile workstation. Like many other laptop makers, Apple has adopted USB-C and Thunderbolt ports that can support virtually every type of peripheral or data transfer possible. These small ports can carry power, data, audio and video through one cable. All you need to unleash this magic is a dock with all the extra ports that can turn a Mac into a workstation. Ivanky has released the MacBook Pro Docking Station and it’s been made specifically for the latest MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs that feature two dual USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. The hub is an unusual design in that it has a single connector featuring two USB-C male connectors that carries the data streams from the Mac’s two ports and channels them into one dock that offers 12 inputs and outputs. The size of this dock is about the same as a large smartphone and as thick as a pack of playing cards. It’s finished in a super shiny black plastic that will be an absolute finger-mark magnet, but it does look smart and sleek. What you get for the money is a dock that can deliver up to 114W of power. This consists of a maximum of 96W for driving a MacBook plus another 18W USB-C power output for charging a tablet or a smartphone. In addition to the muscular power delivery, the Ivanky dock can drive two external 4K monitors at refresh rates of up 60Hz. This makes the hub ideal for photographers, video editors and remote workers having to work at home using two screens. Additionally, the hub provides four regular USB-A ports compliant with USB 3.0 standard. These can be used for connecting peripherals like a mouse, keyboard and USB flash drives at speeds of up to 5Gbps. For those who want to upload photos or audio files from memory cards, there are slots for SD and microSD cards that can transfer files at speeds of up to 104 MB/s and will support maximum card capacities of 512GB. For MacBook users who want to connect to an Ethernet network, Ivanky has provided an RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port with up to 1,000 Mbps connectivity. This is particularly useful for anyone working in an office without Wi-Fi or who finds the wireless network at work is too sluggish for uploading large videos or data files to a central server.
