Series 6 is out. Here’s the TL:DW upgrade guide:
Series 1-3, that’s a no-brainer.
Series 4, Maybe
Series 5, WHY?
I’m approaching this upgrade guide based on things that will have the largest effect to you on a daily basis. Now the caveat with “daily basis” will also depend on your age which I’ll elaborate later.

From a feature perspective, the AW 6 basically has 3 new features that no other device in this list has.
-Blood Oxygen Sensor
-U1 Chip
-Always on altimeter
I’m mentioning this now so that I don’t have to repeat myself. I’ll give you my take on the features later as well.
--Upgrading from the Apple Watch Series 1 and 2--
Upgrading this devices from 4-5 years ago? The Series 6 would be a big upgrade for you.
The biggest reason to? Your current watch isn’t supported by WatchOS 7.
--Upgrading from the Apple Watch Series 3--
With the Series 3, which is a device that Apple is still selling, the Series 6 would be a worthy upgrade.
The thing you’ll notice first on a day to day basis? The screen. Big, bright and it’s always on. I do remember jumping to the bigger screen and the 30% on paper didn’t seem like much BUT it is.
When it comes to health, you’ll end up gaining a newer HR sensor along with ECG and Fall Detection technologies. The improved HR sensor would automatically be useful sense the device is going to use it all the time but the ECG and Fall Detection? That’ll depend.
Other upgrades that the Series 6 will have for Series 3 users is international emergency calling, BT 5.0, haptic feedback with the digital crown and it’s going to sound louder.
Having BT 5.0 is going to be noticeable if you use smart home gadgets alot. Better range = better home notifications.
--Upgrading from the Apple Watch Series 4--
Would I upgrade from a Series 4? Maybe. If I was bored and if I had the spare cash lying around BUT there is a worthwhile upgrade that you’ll notice immediately between the 4 and 6.
The always on screen.
I personally found having to wake my watch face mildly annoying when I first got the Apple Watch. All the other smartwatches I was using at the time didn’t have that issue.
From a health perspective, you won’t notice a big difference as you still get the ECG and Fall Detection.
Other upgrades you may notice is the larger storage capacity.
--Upgrading from the Series 5--
When it comes to the series 5, I can’t think of any standout reason why anybody would upgrade to the Series 6.
Back to the caveat I mentioned at the beginning of the video. Your age is going to effect what you think are going to be useful features in the decision to upgrade. The older you get, the higher chance that the health features are going to be beneficial to you.
For me personally, I have a heart condition. Will the Apple Watch be able to detect it directly? Not according to my physician. BUT if my heart condition got worse, would it come out in a lower Blood Oxygen level? Maybe.
I’m technically in my 30’s but at 39 and I can tell you stuff doesn’t move as well. So being able to collect as much data about how my body is slowing down, isn’t a bad thing from my perspective.
Last week I was running with my kid and rolled my bad ankle. I’m young/limber enough to recover from that and keep going but an older version of me? I don’t know. If my wife wasn’t there and I KO’d on the sidewalk, my toddler or Monty would not know what to do so having fall detection on my device? Would be handy.
What I’m getting at is upgrading to the Series 6 which has the most amount of health sensors now is a way of protecting myself for the future. The amount will be minimal for younger people but as you get older, that amount is going to get incrementally larger. It’s almost like free insurance...
