Apple to Manufacture iPhone 12 in Bangalore, Likely to Cost Less than iPhone 11
Apple has only recently started manufacturing the iPhone 11 in India. However, a new report now suggests that the company will be manufacturing its 2020 flagship, the iPhone 12 in the country as well. The Business Standard report claims that Apple is investing huge sums in its Bengaluru plant for the process. This goes in line with recent reports that Wistron, one of Apple’s manufacturing partners, is hiring 10,000 new employees for its plant in Karnataka.

All of this spells great news for the country’s Make in India initiative. With Apple manufacturing its flagship iPhone in India, we can also expect the new iPhone to be relatively more affordable than the iPhone 11.

As a quick refresher, the iPhone 11 was cheaper at launch than the iPhone XR in India. However, since Apple will be making the iPhone 12 in India from the get-go, it’s likely that the iPhone 12 will have a considerably lower price than the iPhone 11 since it will avoid import duties.

Obviously, that is something we have yet to see. However, bringing the price of the iPhone down in India will prove beneficial for Apple. The country’s smartphone market may be big (even with slowing growth), but people simply don’t buy iPhones due to the high prices especially when compared to iPhone prices in the US and elsewhere.

This year, Apple is expected to launch four new iPhone models varying in screen sizes from 5.4-inches to 6.7-inches. The company has already confirmed a delay in the iPhone 12 launch, but we are expecting the phones to be unveiled in October.

New iOS 14 Beta Offers More Evidence of 5.4-inch iPhone 12

Apple has today released the third public beta for iOS 14 and while so far there are no new features, evidence of a 5.4-inch iPhone has been found in the software. Spotted by 9to5Mac, the website noticed a change in the ‘Display Zoom’ feature in iOS 14 to support the claim.

First, a little explanation. The Display Zoom feature in iOS works by making the OS behave as if your iPhone has a smaller screen. Therefore, the icons and text all become bigger. For example, an iPhone 11 Pro Max will behave like an iPhone 11 Pro when Display Zoom is turned on.

However, in iOS 14 Beta 3, 9to5Mac has spotted an even smaller resolution than the 5.8-inch resolution of the iPhone 11 Pro. For the first time, Display Zoom is now available on the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 Pro. iOS 14 scales their resolution down to 960 x 2079 which perfectly fits a 5.4-inch iPhone, the report mentions. That hints towards a smaller, 5.4-inch iPhone coming out this year.

Obviously, this isn’t the first time we have heard reports about Apple’s plans for a smaller iPhone 12. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and an independent Bloomberg report have previously claimed that a smaller iPhone 12 will be coming out this year, and multiple other reports have also mentioned similar things for the new iPhone. From what we know so far, the iPhone 12 series will have four different iPhones, including a 5.4-inch iPhone 12, two 6.1-inch iPhone 12 variants (including one iPhone 12 Pro), and a 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.
