What to expect from WWDC for iPad users
1. Widgets on the home screen.
2. Improved external monitor support. This includes scalability on external displays.
3. Improved mouse support. At the moment the mouse cursor tries to copy your finger which is the logical extension of what mouse support should look like on a touch screen device. But this is at odds with how you need to use the mouse when you want to use pro apps that require real mouse support. In other words, sometimes I need an arrow pointer to do precise work in Figma for instance. And I don’t want to wait when trying to drag something. At the moment you need to click, then wait for the OS to realise you want to start a drag then you can drag the object. It should work more like the MacBook. Click on object, start drag, drag happens, done.
4. Can low power mode come to the iPad? Now that the iPad is my primary computer I there comes a time in the afternoon where I my charge is running low and I wish I could put the iPad into low power mode the way I can with my iPhone. Apple knows what parts of the OS to switch off to maintain battery power for the iPhone. They should now bring those learnings to the iPad.
5. Pro apps. No more baby apps. We need apps like final cut to make the jump to iPad. And we need them to work just as well on the iPad as on the Mac. Photoshop for iPad is an awful app and is still the poster child for how not to make an iPad app in my opinion. We need companies like Adobe to take the iPad seriously. We also need Google to take the iPad seriously and make better apps. Their apps, to be frank, suck. Apps like Google Meet are show us just how bad Google is at app UI. They need to do more and they need to pay attention to this right now. The iPad is over a decade old after all. Would it make sense to put XCode onto the iPad?
6. Keyboard shortcuts to adjust brightness, volume and control media. This will be especially handy considering the Magic Keyboard is missing a function row.
7. Web Inspector for Safari.
8. Splitview needs to be overhauled.
9. It’s too hard to tell which apps are active. Apple needs a way to show us what’s going to happen onscreen now that keyboard support is so good. When I have two safari windows open, and I want to hit command+w to close a tab, how do I know which tab is going to be closed? How can I tell which instance of safari is currently active? The current indicator at the top is too subtle.
10. Shortcuts are great but they need more control over the OS.
11. Default apps – the iPad is a computer. That means we need to be able to set apps as the default for things like email and web browsing. That way we can switch to opening email links in Gmail and urls into Chrome. Hopefully Chrome will grow up soon and become more like Safari on the iPad.
12. This will never happen but can we have multiple accounts?
13. Make it less buggy.
14. Health app on iPad? It would be great if I could use the Health app on the larger screen of the iPad and see more information at a glance. It would also make it possible to pull information from the health app on iPad to use in Shortcuts.
15. Improved Siri.
16. Smarter use of the screen area. Phone calls and siri take over the entire screen at the moment. I would prefer these to show up as larger notifications instead.
17. Lock screen complications.
18. Real time translation and subtitles on device.
19. Fully integrated Shazam.
20. Could the iPad detect on boot if it’s attached to a keyboard or if it’s in landscape orientation and show the Apple logo the right side up?
21. Show iPhone apps the right way up.
22. A calculator app for the iPad.
23. Finder for iPad. Scrap the files app and bring over a more capable version of the iPad that’s optimised for the iPad.
24. Hardware – AirTags, a new iMac that looks like a large iPad? A new Apple TV remote
25. Wallpaper management – time of day changing wallpapers.
26. Of course, the Mac is going to transition to ARM chips.
