iPad Pro 2021 Reports Reveal Breathtaking Upgrade

The new iPad Pro is almost here and it already looks like it’s going to be the biggest upgrade to a tablet. But new reports show that the performance increase is going to be staggering. A series of Geekbench reports seen by the excellent Joe Rossignol at MacRumors reveal a level of performance that’s highly impressive. Here’s the thing: we’ve known for months that the processor was going to be fast. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that they were going to be “on par” with the M1 in the MacBook Air. That proved to be true, given that the processor in the iPad Pro literally is the M1. The Geekbench 5 results which are quoted say that the next iPad Pro will be around 50% faster than the current model. That’s unprecedented, though it is what Apple told us when the product was first revealed. Just as impressively, the benchmarks indicate that the next tablet will be more effective than even the 16in MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9 processor, and having used that laptop extensively, I can tell you it’s no slouch. The multi-core result for that MacBook Pro was 6,845, much faster than the A12Z chip in the 2020 iPad Pro with its score of 4,656. The new iPad Pro has a score that beats both of those easily: 7,284. In fact, the chip is only beaten by the M1 MacBook Air which has a score of 7,378. Of course, you might say, most of us don’t need this kind of performance, do we? Well, you might think that, but wait until the next-gen games arrive, designed to squeeze every ounce of performance out of the processor. It’s possible that the new miniLED display technology that’s going to be at the heart of the 12.9in iPad Pro, will require some of the power in this chip, but that still leaves plenty, surely, for other needs? The iPad Pro is on sale now and the first units are expected to arrive with buyers in just over a week.
