Apple released this tablet as a redesign to the old generation iPad Airs, bringing it inline with the iPad Pro design and features, for example, the new iPad Air has USB-C instead of Lightning and support for the new, 2nd generation magnetic Apple Pencil.
While it's not the cheapest, the iPad Air brings some serious improvements over the entry level, 8th gen iPad. First of all, the speakers, with such a large device, it makes a lot of sense to have them on both sides of the tablet. The movie watching experience is much more immersive, while it also means that covering one of the speakers won't muffle the sound as much.
The screen is another area where the Air has a noticeable improvement. The 8th gen iPad doesn't have a laminated screen, meaning there is an air gap between the glass and the display. On the Air, this is not the case, just like on the iPhones. This is important to consider if you're used to high end phones and laptops, downgrading on the display department is just not worth it if you want to enjoy your media to its fullest. Also, the much smaller bezels on the Air mean that the device can have a larger display than the entry level iPad, while being very similar in size.
Comparing the iPad Air to its brother, the iPad Pro, there isn't much that you are missing out on. For sofa media consumption, not having 120Hz refresh rate won't be that big of a compromise and losing LiDAR and the Ultrawide Camera is just irrelevant for such a device. The only 2 reasons I can see for buying a 2020 Pro if you'll mostly use it for media consumption is if you want the larger, 12.9 inch display or can't live without FaceID. Personally, I find the size and weight of the Air to be just right, the heavier 12.9 inch Pro would probably remind me of the times I was trying to use my MacBook Pro comfortably in bed. As far as the lack of FaceID goes, I do miss it, but I've also gotten used to turning the iPad on using the power button, which automatically reads my fingerprint through TouchID.
