I Worked A Day And Didn't Hate The New iPad Pro Apple quietly dropped a new high-end iPad, the sixth-generation iPad Pro, last week, and in my unit review, I couldn't get past the fact that this thing is way too powerful and packed with the features you'd expect. laptop. So I wanted to test it: Can the iPad Pro replace a business laptop? Short answer: yes and no. Using iPad Pro as a business laptop For full transparency, this entire article was written on the iPad Pro. The only thing I couldn't do was upload images to the CMS we used to publish. I downloaded the Microsoft Word app and a Chrome browser, Twitter app, Slack app, and I didn't have much to accomplish. day-to-day tasks. I used the Notes app to easily connect to things on my MacBook, but AirDrop also helped. But all this happens when setting up a new phone/laptop/tablet, logging into things, resetting passwords, getting call history to remember you, etc. It was the usual effort you had to expend. I have to say here that you can plug in an external storage device through the Files app and use it just like you would through the Finder on a Mac. Mind-boggling, I don't remember knowing this . Magic Keyboard Earlier this year, I wrote that the Magic Keyboard changed my mind about using an iPad for work. This was on the iPad Air and most of my complaints were related to the keyboard/screen size and the single-screen app thing. Both of these concerns were fixed in this scenario, and typing on the iPad Pro was a really pleasant experience . The Magic Keyboard is sturdy and keeps the iPad Pro sitting on my lap while I work. The screen size is also essentially the same size as my 14-inch MacBook, so everything is big enough, I'm not squinting, and to be honest, the iPad liquid retina XDR display is stunning. Powerful features The iPad Pro includes the same M2 chip that debuted in MacBooks earlier this year. Our M2 MacBook Pro review had a lot to say about the M2 MacBook Air and the like. On the iPad Pro, this means that the device can more than handle my 82 tabs that I absolutely need for work. I said it in the review, but it's worth saying again - you can't get the iPad Pro unless you need it. To be honest, my business needs are far below what the iPad Pro can do. I'm definitely not maximizing what the tablet can do. When the iPad Pro is paired with the Magic Keyboard, it gives us the answer: Why didn't Apple make a MacBook with a touchscreen? Because that's basically how this thing happens. Unfortunately, you pay for it. You're looking at a total of $4,197 to get the experience I had. The MacBook Pro I usually use for work is $3,749 . Pricing is per Apple Store. where the software is Now a lot of the reasons I think the 2022 iPad Pro is Apple's chance to replace a laptop is down to software. iPadOS 16 brought many great capabilities such as collaboration and usability, but using them together with the M2 chip gives you a heightened experience. Its biggest feature is Stage Manager. This makes the iPad more like a Mac. You have a taskbar, alt+tab, the ability to see minimized windows/applications on the side and spread the app you are in to the size you need. But it's still a tablet, and I can still treat it like a tablet. I can say more about the best features of iPadOS 16, but it's clear that Apple has nailed the tablet space and made it something you can use instead of a laptop. In Mail, you can now undo send, schedule sending, and set a time to be reminded of an email. Basically, the Apple Mail app is now more on par with Gmail. If collaborating is your thing, there are also tons of collaboration features. My thoughts on the iPad Pro as a business machine After spending the day using the sixth generation iPad Pro like my MacBook, I must say the only thing I miss is the Finder. Storing documents/images on the desktop is something I'm so used to on a daily basis that I have to find workarounds or compromises for what I think makes me more productive with the iPad Pro. If I were to decide on the iPad Pro as my main work machine, I'm sure within a week I would have told you everything was fine and new ways to do things. The screen is big enough that I can split the screen, but using Stage Manager you have the ability to resize and overlay apps - just like you would on a MacBook. You can also connect an external display with a resolution of up to 6K. And to reiterate, the addition of the Magic Keyboard is what makes it usable as a laptop. It took a while for my fake quotes to register the tiny spaces between keys, but autocorrect found a way to fix it. The keyboard behaves exactly the same as a MacBook keyboard , and the addition of the Apple Pencil adds to this overall 'productive power'. Here's how Apple whips this tablet up. You can definitely use the 2022 iPad Pro instead of a laptop, the on
