In this quick tech how-to video, I’m going to show you how to change app icons on iPhone. One of the coolest under-the-radar apps on your iPhone is the Shortcuts app. This app functions similar to how Automator functions on mac OS so if you have used that, you’ll have a general understanding of the power in the shortcuts app.

Let’s change an app icon though. Open the shortcuts app on your phone. If you can’t find it, swipe down on your home screen and search shortcuts. In the upper right-hand corner, tap the plus sign. Now tap the three dots in the right-hand corner.

Give your new shortcut a name, and to the left of the name, tap the image… Then tap add to the home screen. On this screen, you can set a custom home screen name and icon. Tap the icon and select one of the three options, take a photo, choose photo, or choose file. You’ll be able to select jpegs or pngs if you have any in your files folder on your phone. Once you have the photo or icon you want to use for this app, tap adds in the upper right. You’ll get a message that says added to the home screen but we aren’t done yet.

Select done in the upper right-hand corner. On this page, we are going to use built-in scripting to open the app that we are replacing with a custom icon. Tap add action, in the search bar type open app. You should see “Open App”, tap on that, and then tap CHOOSE,
find the app that you want the new icon to open, and tap it to select it. Now in the upper right-hand corner tap done once more.

Go to your home screen and you should see the app icon, and name that we created. Tap on it and it will open the app you chose. One last step is to clean up our home screen.

This is optional but if you don’t want multiple icons that open the same app then tap and hold on the original app icon then select edit home screen.
