Apple has started assembling its flagship iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai, India. This is the first time the tech giant will be assembling a flagship device in the country.
As of now, users will not see the drop in prices but it is believed that we might see this happen eventually as producing these devices locally will save Apple 22 percent on import duty.

Apple has been making two handset models in the country - iPhone XR which is being assembled by Foxconn in Chennai and iPhone 7 assembled by Wistron in Bangalore.
The original iPhone SE and iPhone 6s were assembled by Wistron, but those were discontinued in 2019.
Going forward, Apple may consider exporting the India-made iPhone 11s and we are yet to get a confirmation on that.

Experts believe that huge opportunities lie ahead for India to become a manufacturing and export hub for handsets owing to the Indian government’s push. After the launch of the PLI scheme in April, OEMs are planning to set up production bases in India.

It’s not just Apple, homegrown brand Lava is also planning to shift its handset production from China to India to leverage the PLI scheme. Apple is also planning to shift 20 percent smartphone production from China to India and this move by Apple is a step in that direction. In fact, Piyush Goyal tweeted calling this move a “Significant boost to Make in India!”
Commerce and Industry Minister #PiyushGoyal (@PiyushGoyal) on Friday said that #Apple has started manufacturing its highest-selling model #iPhone11 in India which is a significant boost to the #MakeinIndia initiative.

This is the first time Apple has manufactured a top-of-the-line model in India.

Apple also has plans to make the iPhone SE 2020 in India in its Wistron plant near Bangalore.Earlier this month, Foxconn, which is a leading supplier for Apple has planned to invest up to $1 billion to expand its India factory where it assembles iPhone models.
Pegatron — the second-largest iPhone assembler after Foxconn — was also reported to make some investment in the country and set up a local subsidiary in the coming future.

Retail sources told IANS on Friday that there are a few ‘Assembled in India' units that have reached their stores. According to them, lockdown delayed the assembled iPhone 11 units but now, there has been an increase in the supply.

However, there is no price cut and the MRP on locally assembled iPhone 11s remains the same as earlier, they added.
This comes as a shock as many expected making the device locally would bring the device cost down as it’ll help Apple avoid a 22 percent tax that it is needed to be paid for importing the handset from its global manufacturing facilities
