At launch in January 2002, the iMac G4 came in three flavors: a low-end model for $1299 that included a 700MHz G4 PowerPC processor, 128MB RAM, a 40GB hard drive, and a CD-RW drive; a mid-range model for $1499 that upped the RAM to 256 MB and included a CD-RW/DVD-ROM “Combo Drive”; and a high-end model for $1799 that included an 800MHz G4 porcessor, 256MB RAM, a 60GB hard drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-R “Super Drive.”

iMac G5 2004
Introduced on the last day of August 2004, the iMac G5 brought G5 muscle to Apple's consumer desktop line.Housed in a completely new enclosure reminiscent of Apple's Cinema Display line, the iMac G5 was a marvel of miniaturization. The case was only two inches thick, yet housed a machine considerably faster and more advanced than its G4-based predecessor.

iMac Aluminum 2007
In August 2007, Apple introduced a complete redesign of the iMac, featuring an aluminum, glass and plastic enclosure. There is only one visible screw on the entire computer, located at the base of the iMac for accessing the memory slots.
The back is no longer removable and is now a continuation of the aluminum body from the front and sides. Camera resolution has been increased to 1.3 mpx instead of previous 0.3 mpx.

iMac Aluminum Unibody 2009
The October 2009 iMac model featured a unibody aluminum enclosure, a version of which can still be seen on the current model. The current iMacs released since October 2012 also feature a much thinner display, with the edge measuring just 5 mm.

iMac Slim Aluminum Unibody 2012
The 2012 iMac's most visible innovation is, of course, its physical design—this is the first substantial change to the iMac's body since the aluminum unibody iMacs were introduced in late 2009. The edges of the computer are just 5 mm wide, a significant reduction from the desktops the company has been selling for the last few years. The end result is a computer that is substantially lighter and thinner than it was before.

iMac 5K Retina display 2014
Apple skips 4K and goes directly to what the company calls a 5K display in this expensive, extravagant all-in-one iMac desktop that will appeal to photo and video professionals -- or anyone else looking for the best possible screen resolution.
