8mm Vintage Camera App for Apple IOS.

There are many vintage film-look apps for video, but this one is the best I’ve tried. It only works for Apple IOS, tho. I did a review of this app years ago and I still love the look it creates and the idea behind the look. So I decided to do another review. Plus I got a lot of views on the last vid...so there's that.

I’ve tried to imitate the look of this app by shooting the native camera app in the iPhone SE, iPhone XS, or on the Google Pixel 3…but it’s really hard to create a film-look in post. It’s such a complex process.

I love/hate the 8mm app because it’s so simple. The lack of control means it's a more solid app that rarely crashes, if ever. It forces your attention on story/character, rather than production value. But since it has very little choice in color control...it needs some work in post to tweak the color. But this is only because I'm anal about color. If you happen to like the color grades it offers in-camera...you're away. I prefer the Tuscan color grade and it just has way to much magenta in it. Removing it is a challenge but mostly doable.

I had some audio issues with the 8mm app which were very annoying and I wasted a lot of time patching them in post. But later, after I was done, I found out that I had set up my project file the wrong way in Final Cut Pro X. It's another example of the importance of minimalism.

There are so many things that can go wrong on a movie. Even with a mobile phone camera, one little detail can kill you. And then you waste so much time trying to fix and repair. This is why I prefer built-in mics for audio. Built-in mics are super simple and very stable. Audio is very fragile and there are so many ways for it to go wrong. It's critical to develop a very simple work flow system, lock it down, and don't change it. This allows you to focus on the things that matter, like story and character. And actually shooting the movie, getting it done, and posting it. The less friction in the creative process, the more likely you will create.

-Shot entirely on the iPhone SE (1st generation 2016). With the 8mm Vintage Camera App. Mainly using the Tuscan color profile. And a few shots using the Noir color profile.
-960x720p24. 4:3 aspect ratio.
-Audio via built-in mics.
-Handheld.
