During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed the 2021 Volkswagen Golf 8 R testing on track.

Volkswagen has been busy giving its upcoming R performance models a workout at the Nurburgring to ensure they live up to expectations. Our spies caught the new Volkswagen Arteon R being put through its paces at the Green Hell, and now the new Golf R has been spied racing around the iconic German circuit. Ever since the new eighth-generation Golf was revealed last year, enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting VW's new performance variants. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI broke cover last month, and so the wait begins for the new range-topping Golf R to arrive.

Like the prototype that was spied last year, Volkswagen hasn't bothered to extensively disguise the Golf R during its testing session at the Nurburgring. The front bumper has been lightly covered, but other than that this prototype is completely free of camouflage, giving us a clear look at the hot hatchback's sporty design.

Compared to the previous prototype, this one has been fitted with a large rear spoiler to keep the Golf R glued to the track during the high-speed testing. A lowered ride height, more aggressive air intakes, beefier brakes, and a quad exhaust system also give the Golf R a sportier appearance than its standard sibling.

According to leaked specifications, the new Volkswagen Golf R will pack a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine rated at 328 horsepower, which is 37 more hp than the current Golf R. Like the previous generation model, all that power will be sent via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to an all-wheel-drive system. With more power on tap, expect the 0-62 mph sprint time to be less than 4.5 seconds.

Sadly, we still don't have a reveal date for the new Golf R. Sources claim VW's hardcore hatchback was going to debut at the 2020 Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, but the show has been postponed until a later unannounced date. Hopefully, Volkswagen will still reveal the new Golf R in the second half of this year.
