Future trading in Steam may become more time consuming and worse. Trading sites and sites that use trading bots may disappear.

The information in this video is brand new and may be wrong. If you find a mistake, point it out and the video will be updated.

What’s said by steam in a future pop-up:
“After a trade has been accepted by both parties, if either party's account has not been secured by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, then to protect against unauthorized trades, the traded items will be placed in escrow. During the escrow period, the items will not be available to either user. This allows users who have not secured their accounts to cancel any unauthorized trades and recover their items. Canceling all pending and in-escrow trades will place a trading hold on your account for a few days to prevent any further unauthorized attempts to trade away items.”

Hey everybody Dom here. Breaking news: A future update to Steam may detrimentally harm trading and trading services.

Code for a future anti-theft feature has been found on Steam. This code is not yet active. The code refers to a new feature called “Escrow.” The way the feature works is: in a trade on Steam, if either party doesn’t have their steam account liked to smartphones, (if they don’t have Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator), rather than trading regularly, items traded are placed in a sort of limbo. These items can’t be accessed or used until an undetermined span of time passes. Afterwards the items go to where ever they would normally go. The point of Escrow is it allows either party to have days to stop a trade in case their account as been compromised. When a trade is stopped the account that stopped the trade gets a temporary trading hold placed on it.

Right now Escrow is being heavily criticised by the community. A petition exists to get Valve to not implement Escrow. The main complaints are that people who don’t have smartphones are penalized. People with multiple accounts require multiple smartphones. The speed of trading is an important factor, as sometimes new items release and people trade items quickie for profit while such a window exists. The last main complain is that third party sites that use Steam Trading and bots may be severely affected or may have to shutdown.
